The term was first used to refer to the day the gold market collapsed in the USA in 1869. Eventually people took to calling it Black Friday due to the traffic and chaos caused by the many shoppers heading to the stores for holiday deals. These days Black Friday is synonymous with deals and discounts and the name is used to reference the fact that stores are often "in the black" (profitable) on this day.
