Two appliances. One cavity.

A combi microwave is a microwave that doesn’t stop at reheating. Combine standard microwave heating with convection, grill, or both, and you’ve got an appliance that can bake, roast and brown without needing a separate oven to do it.

That’s why they’re popular in kitchens where space is tight, or where a built-in second oven would be useful, but a full double oven is overkill. Most quality combi models are designed to sit flush in a wall cavity at eye level, which frees up bench space and keeps the kitchen looking considered. Choosing a combi microwave is just as much a kitchen design decision as a cooking one.

Which type of combi microwave do you need?

Not all combi microwaves work the same way. The right type comes down to how you cook and where the appliance is going to live.

Convection combi microwave

A convection combi microwave adds a fan-forced heating element to standard microwave technology. This means you get oven performance: even heat distribution, browning and crisping that a standard microwave can’t achieve. These are the most common combi type sold in Australia.

Grill combi microwave

Grill combi microwaves pair microwave heating with a built-in grill element, handy when you want to finish a dish with some colour on top without firing up the main oven. Some models include convection and grill together, giving you the full range of cooking modes from a single unit.

Built-in combi microwave

Built-in combi microwaves are designed to install flush into cabinetry or a wall cavity, at eye level alongside your main oven. Your benchtop stays clear; your kitchen looks the part.

Countertop combi microwave

If you’re renting, renovating in stages, or just want to trial the format before committing to a built-in installation, a countertop combi microwave sits on your bench and does the same job. Flexible, fuss-free and easy to take with you if you move.

What to look for before you buy

Capacity

Combi microwave capacity runs from around 25L up to 45L. For a single person or couple, 25–30L would be big enough. If you’re regularly cooking larger meals, roasts or deep dishes, go 38L or above. One thing worth checking: actual internal dimensions vary quite a bit between brands at the same litre rating, so look at the cavity measurements rather than just the number.

Cooking modes

More modes give you more flexibility, though realistically most people use three: microwave only, convection only, and combination mode (microwave and convection running together for faster cooking with better results). Grill is also a worthwhile consideration if you want browned or crisped finishes. Some models also throw in steam, air fry or auto-programs for common dishes.

Wattage

Most quality combi microwaves sit between 900W and 1,100W for microwave output, with convection elements ranging from 1,800W to 2,500W. Higher wattage generally means faster preheating and quicker cooking times across both modes; it doesn’t automatically mean better cooking, but it does mean less waiting.

Installation requirements

Going built-in? Measure the cavity carefully before you buy. Most built-in combi microwaves are designed for a 60cm wide space, but height and depth requirements vary between brands. Check the cutout dimensions in the spec sheet and confirm a trim kit is included or available separately. Getting this right before purchase saves a lot of headaches on installation day.

Combi microwave brands at Betta

Fisher & Paykel has built-in convection styles with Auto Cook programs, easy-clean interiors and clean stainless finishes. A solid pick if you want reliability and genuine range breadth from a brand you know well.

Design matters as much as performance for a lot of built-in buyers, and Smeg’s combi microwave models deliver on both counts. Multi-function convection and grill modes sit inside the brand’s signature retro aesthetic, with a look that works equally well in modern and classic kitchens.

Westinghouse is a go-to for kitchen renovations where reliable everyday performance is the priority. Four combi microwave models at a price point that makes the upgrade straightforward, without overcomplicating the decision.

Clean lines, a European design sensibility and convection and grill capability, Electrolux’s combi microwave range fits neatly into standard cabinetry and suits kitchens where a minimal, unfussy aesthetic is the goal.

Also in the range: ASKO, Omega, Bosch and Haier, covering a spread of sizes, installation types and price points so you can find the right fit regardless of budget or kitchen layout.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a combi microwave and a regular microwave?

A regular microwave uses microwave energy only, which reheats and defrosts efficiently but can’t brown, crisp or bake. A combi microwave adds convection, grill or both, so it handles most of what a conventional oven does as well as the quick everyday reheat tasks.

Are combi microwaves worth it for a small kitchen?

Yes, particularly if you’re short on bench space or cabinetry. A built-in combi microwave at eye level handles roasting, baking and grilling in a single cavity, without needing a separate oven taking up room elsewhere in the kitchen.

Can a combi microwave replace an oven?

It can handle roasting, baking and grilling, but capacity is the honest limitation: most combi microwaves max out around 38–45 litres compared to 60–80 litres in a standard oven. For a single person, a couple or as a capable second appliance, they’re hard to beat; for a busy family kitchen, they work best alongside a full oven rather than instead of one.
