Size

The right mattress should comfortably fit whoever is sleeping on it, whether that is just yourself, you and your spouse or you also want to leave some space for the kids and pets.

Mattresses start from a Single size, typically used for the bedding of young kids. The larger King Single mattress size is ideal for older kids and adults, and they make a great option for the guest bedroom.

Couples will benefit from larger mattresses which include Double size and onwards (Queen, King and Super King). To help you determine the best mattress for you, below is a list of each mattress type, its size, and dimensions:

Super King Mattress: 203cm x 203cm

Suitable for two adults with co-sleeping infants/pets with very generous sleeping area within a large room layout.

King Mattress: 183cm x 203cm

Suitable for two adults with co-sleeping infant/pets with a generous sleeping area.

Queen Mattress: 153cm x 203cm

Suitable for two adults with more sleeping area.

Double Mattress: 138cm x 188cm

Suitable for a teenager or two adults within a limited size room.

King Single Mattress: 107cm x 203cm

Suitable for a teenager or single adult with more overall sleeping area.

Long Single Mattress: 92cm x 203cm

Suitable for a teenager with room to grow or single adult.

Single Mattress: 92cm x 188cm

Suitable for smaller child transitioning from a cot, or young adolescent.

Measure Up: measure the size of your room and ensure there is at least 60cm to 90cm on either side of the bed for easy access to the bed. You should also leave at least 10-15cm head space for the tallest person sleeping on the mattress.

Feels

How do you like to sleep? Do you like to sink into a soft and fluffy cloud-like mattress, or do you prefer the support of a firmer mattress surface? The mattress type, also known as ‘feel’ or ‘firmness’ will be determined by the support your body needs. Personal circumstances such as injuries or chronic pain, daily activities and personal preferences should also be considered.

The firmness levels available across most mattress brands are ‘Plush’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Firm’.

  • Plush Feel: A soft and luxurious feel that lets you ‘sink’ in. Support is provided to relieve pressure points such as those on your hips and shoulders and for side-sleepers, the plush feel is ideal for improved comfort and support around your hips and shoulders when you sleep on your side.
  • Medium Feel: Soft yet firm, a medium feel features comfy soft spots with firmness to deliver extra support. Medium feel mattresses are suitable for stomach and back sleepers as it contours to your body without the sinking feeling of a plush feel mattress.
  • Firm Feel: Boasts an even and stable surface that provides maximum comfort and support. Firm feel mattresses are ideal for those who enjoy sleeping on their backs or have back aches, as well as stomach-sleepers. A firm mattress will help keep the spine of stomach-sleepers aligned and not sink in like it would on a plush mattress.

We also offer other feels across a selected range of mattresses:

  • Flexi: These mattresses are ideal for adjutable bed bases as they have the ability to flex and move more easily than other feels.
  • Deluxe: The perfect comination of the support of a medium feel mattress, with the softness of a plush sleep surface.
  • Super Firm: The ultimate support and comfort for heavier body weights.

Technology

A mattress typically consists of two main sections or layers. This includes the core, also known as the ‘support system’ and the ‘comfort layer’. There are two types of mattress support systems: coils and foam. Each support system provides a different type of rest experience.

  • Coils Support System: Commonly found in mattresses with innersprings, coils are metal springs that are arranged within the mattress’s centre to support the weight of the sleeper. The coils respond to the body’s weight to provide all-over support and pressure relief. The number of coils and their configuration often determine the value of the mattress, for example, a mattress with more coils will cost more than one with fewer.
  • Foam Support System: A mattress with a foam support system, such as a memory foam mattress, features a layer of viscoelastic that is highly soft. This foam material absorbs your weight as you ‘sink’ into the mattress, removing pressure off your joints and pain points. The foam may also mould to the shape of your body, providing responsive and personalised body support.

The outer ‘comfort layer’ of a mattress may be made up of the below-mentioned materials (wool, cotton etc) to cover the mattress surface and help provide cushioning.

Materials

Mattresses are crafted from many innovative foams and fabric layers that all contribute to the mattress’ quality and your sleep experience. Below are some common materials used in mattresses:

  • Wool: with properties that help naturally regulate temperatures, wool promotes breathability within the mattress for greater comfort
  • Foam: supportive as it conforms to the body, foam redistributes pain points for reduced pressure as you rest
  • Cotton: breathable with antimicrobial properties, cotton delivers a comfortable and healthy sleeping environment
  • Tencel®: new to the market, Tencel is an eco-friendly fibre that’s made from wood pulp, with a silk-like texture that’s cool-to-touch, moisture absorbent and antibacterial
  • Latex: durable and hypoallergenic, Latex repels bacteria, dust mites and other pathogens from inhabiting on the mattress and it contours to your body’s weight and curves for reduced tossing and turning
  • Cool-to-touch fabrics: these come in different forms and boast technologies that enable them to offer lower temperatures for cooler sleep at night; perfect during the Australian summer and warmer temperatures as it expels heat throughout the night.

Adjustable Mattresses

Adjustable-friendly mattresses are a growing option with many brands offering adjustable mattresses to meet different rest options and health needs. An adjustable mattress is usually used with an adjustable bed base to deliver extra mobility support to get into and out of bed. An adjustable mattress (and bed) can make sleep and relaxation more comfortable, with many different rest positions which offer health benefits, including:

  • When the legs are raised, pressure can be removed from the lower back and spine
  • Customising the position can improve posture, circulation, digestion and reduce swelling in legs
  • Adjusting the sleeping position can ease breathing difficulties and/or reduce snoring

In an upright position, enjoy an optimal view without the neck strain when reading, watching TV or using your phone or smart device

Buying Tips

If you feel ready to go out and buy your new mattress, don’t leave home without checking out our mattress buying tips.

  • Try It Out
Don’t be afraid to try out the mattress. Sit on it, lie on it, roll around and move in the way that you usually would in bed to see if the mattress is the one for you.
  • Don’t Come Sleepy
You wouldn’t go grocery shopping hungry, so don’t go buying a mattress when you’re tired. Any mattress will feel great when your worn-out body is resting on it, and this may provide a false indication of the mattress.
  • Take Your Time
A new mattress is a big investment in your sleep and health. When trying out a mattress, take your time. Really try and get comfortable to see if your body feels supported by the mattress. It also helps to have loose, comfy clothes on (like you would when sleeping) when you go test out a mattress.
  • Familiarise Yourself
Do your research and know what brands, sizes, firmness levels, comfort technologies, mattress features, types of bed bases, prices and warranty periods are out there. Shopping with all of these in mind may help you make the right decision.
  • Get a Mattress Protector
Protect your new mattress with a mattress protector to reduce occurrences of things like stains, sweat, urine, bodily fluids, bacteria, mould, and other nasty pathogens. This ensures your mattress lasts longer so you get your return on your investment.
