Betta Buying Guide - How to choose the right vacuum cleaner

Vacuuming can be a drag, but with the right vacuum cleaner you can make light of this household job and get it done and dusted in a flash!
How do you know if a vacuum cleaner is the right vacuum cleaner for you? Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping around for a new vacuum cleaner. 


Weight and size

• A vacuum cleaner should be light enough that you can drag it around the house, pick it up and carry it up and down the stairs if needed
• If you live in an apartment or have limited storage space then opt for a compact vacuum cleaner

Features

• A telescopic wand can be adjusted to suit your height so you can spare your back and neck the constant bending over 
• Look for a model that can manoeuvre into hard-to-reach nooks and crannies and can clean the ceiling, tops of tall furniture and ceiling fans, etc. 
• The floor tool needs to be effective on all the different surfaces in your home; carpet (deep-pile, low-pile), tiles, upholstery, timber floors

Barrel, Upright or Handheld? 

 
• Barrel vacuum cleaners have stronger suction than upright vacuums
• Barrel vacuums are easier to store thanks to their flexible hose 

• The traditional, upright vacuum cleaner typically has a rotating brush roll inside the unit, making it more effective at removing dirt
• Upright vacuum cleaners are difficult to manoeuvre into small spaces

• Hand-held vacuums are usually battery-operated and are good for quick clean ups or when there’s only a small area to cover 


Robotic Vacuum Cleaners

In a league of their own are robotic vacuum cleaners; they’re great for those who are time-poor, have smaller homes (particularly single level ones), or simply want out of their vacuuming routine! While robotic vacuum cleaners are great at cleaning hard floors and picking up pet hairs, their suction is not nearly as powerful as standard vacuum cleaners.

HEPA

HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorption) is an international standard for a type of air filter that traps fine particles like pollen better than a standard vacuum cleaner filter. This is a particularly important consideration if there are asthma or allergy sufferers in your home.

Bagged or bagless?

Bagged vacuum cleaners are convenient because all dust and dirt is collected in one dust bag that is easily removed and discarded (or re-used, depending on the model).
If you’re constantly worried that your vacuum cleaner sucked up something it shouldn’t have, a bagless vacuum cleaner is ideal - you can see what goes inside and even sort through the fluff to recover lost items!

Bagged vacuum cleaners have an advantage in that their suction power stays strong as the bag fills up, while bagless vacuum cleaners are susceptible to their suction pathways inside the unit being obstructed. Also, when emptying a bagless vacuum cleaner you are exposed to dust and other particles - this is a health risk for allergy and asthma sufferers.

Pets?

Some vacuum cleaners are better at removing pet hairs than others. If you own a pet and are regularly cleaning up after them, you need a vacuum cleaner with extra cleaning power. Look for a vacuum with powerful suction and a motorised head, or a turbo brush tool attachment, is the way to go.
