Fisher and Paykel

Olive Paykel saw a refrigerator in a magazine in the 1930s and asked her husband to import it from the US to New Zealand. From this start, Olive's husband built an import business that he handed down to his son, Maurice Paykel, who along with his brother-in-law Woolf Fisher, ran a successful business bringing in refrigerators and washers from the US.

In 1938, New Zealand banned the imports due to a currency shortage and Fisher & Paykel decided to take a new approach. Since they could still import parts, they set up their own manufacturing business and manufactured under license to other companies.

Fisher & Paykel sought a way to distinguish their company rather than just producing under the license of others. They did so by being the first in the world to develop and market plastic lines and polyurethane foam insulation for refrigerators.

In the 1980s, Fisher & Paykel introduced Brushless Direct Current Motors, which later led to the development of the first “Smart Drive” washer.

Recently, Fisher & Paykel has received international acclaim for its new Gas on Glass cooktop and 60cm Built-In Oven, both design having won the prestigious Red Dot award.

At Betta, you’ll find Fisher & Paykel fridges, freezers, cooktops, ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers.

For the modern family

Fisher & Paykel recognise that the fridge door is the most used door in the home. Each time the fridge door is opened, the temperature inside fluctuates. To combat this, Fisher & Paykel developed ActiveSmart technology which cleverly controls the fridge’s climate to ensure an optimal storage environment for your food.
