How to Host a Great BBQ

Snags, steaks and salads – the BBQ is one of our greatest Aussie summer traditions. A BBQ is one of the best ways to bring people together, especially if you’re not the dinner party type. To help you impress your friends, we’ve put together some of our favourite tips for throwing a terrific BBQ:

Choose the best BBQ for you
A great BBQ will be the heart of your party. Depending on the space you have available, you may prefer a more compact BBQ, like the Breville BGR500. With a little more space, you can opt for a larger BBQ, like the Sunbeam HG6600B. In choosing, consider how much you’ll be grilling at once, and how often too!

Marinate in advance
For any meats you want to add a marinade to (like a rack of ribs or chicken breasts), it’s essential to get it done at least 24 hours in advance of cooking. This will make sure the flavours have time to soak into the meats, letting them cook better and making sure they’ll taste incredible.

Don’t provide it all
Entertaining can get expensive, whatever the event. The great thing about a BBQ is that people are usually ready to bring a dish with them, taking the pressure off you both in terms of cooking, and money. So, don’t be nervous to accept a guest’s offer to bring something – salads generally go down a treat because everyone has a favourite, meaning more variety on the table and more choice for everybody.

Guests like to nibble
Finger foods are always necessary. The meat may be the main event, but folks will always want something to nibble on as the party gets going. Dips, cold meats and cheeses can be arranged early on and brought out as the first guests arrive.

Provide options
A BBQ menu should go beyond simple steaks and sausages. Kebabs are easy to put together, and make for fun, hands on eating – especially for kids. You can grab ready-skewered meat from the butcher, or skewer your own with some diced lamb. If you’ve got vegetarian guests, they’ll love a veggie-kebab, which can made with most any combination of veggies.

Rest your meat!
When meat comes off the BBQ, allow it to rest, covered in foil, for 5-10 minutes. This will let the juices flow through the cut of meat, making it taste much better than if it were served direct from the grill.
