7 Tips to Save Energy in the Kitchen

7 Tips to Save Energy in the Kitchen

1 Energy Labelling

Appliance makes are always hard at work to make their whitegoods more energy and water efficient, and the modern kitchen reflects this. If you’ve got an ‘old reliable’ DishwasherFreezer or Fridge (especially if it’s being used as a spare), that’s not particularly effect, it may be smarter in the long run to replace it with a new, energy-efficient unit.

2 Keep the Oven Door Closed

If you’re mid-roast or bake, only open the Oven door when absolutely necessary. Heat escapes each time the door is opened, meaning the oven has to expend more energy on bringing the temperature back up. This isn’t just an energy-saver – it’ll also help your food cook more evenly!

3 Run the Dishwasher When Full

While it’s not always possible, make an effort to run your dishwasher only when it’s full. This means fewer loads overall, and less water and energy used.

4 Set the Optimal Fridge Temp

Are you running your fridge at the right temperature? Dialling down the degrees doesn’t necessarily mean your food will stay fresher; the optimal temperature is around 3-5 degrees Celsius.

5 Check Your Door Seals

The seals on your fridge, freezer and oven are essential to a smooth-running appliance. The better a set temperature is maintained naturally, the less energy the appliance has to eat up cooling or heating.

Fortunately, checking your fridge and freezer seals is a pretty simple task. Inspect them for any mould or grime, and clean it away as necessary. Then, place a slip of paper in the between the seal and the door frame. If it can be pulled out easily, your seal isn’t up to scratch, and may need replacement.

6 Cover Food in the Fridge

The moisture released by uncovered food in the fridge can make the compressor work harder than it needs to, chomping on electricity. This is pretty simple – everything you place in the fridge should be covered in plastic, or in a sealed container. If you’ve got leftovers, let them come to room temperature before chilling.

7 Defrost Ingredients or Dishes in the Fridge

Using the Microwave to defrost in a pinch is great, but it’s best for the food and the energy bill to defrost in the fridge. So, if you know roast chook is on the menu for Sunday, pop it into the fridge from Friday, in a towel, and let it gently thaw naturally!
