How to choose a mattress for a Perfect Night Sleep

It’s undeniable that a good night’s sleep is the recipe for a great day ahead. Whether you’re replacing an old mattress, upgrading the size or comfort feel, purchasing the right mattress is will ensure you wake up feeling more refreshed. In-fact, it’s arguably the most important decision you’ll ever make – as nothing is better for your health and well-being.

With varying sizes, comfort feels and a wide price range, shopping for a new mattress can be overwhelming. To help you select the right mattress, we’ve outlined the three most important things you need to consider.

Size Matters!

There is more than one factor you need to consider when deciding on a mattress size. The first thing you should consider is who will be using it - is the mattress for the kids? Just you? Or maybe it’s for you, your spouse and the dog? The size of your bedroom will also determine which size will suit your needs.

Measure up! At a minimum, once you’ve measured the dimensions of your bedroom, you will want to ensure there is at least 60cm to 90cm on either side of the bed for easy access. You should also leave at least 10-15cm head space for the tallest person sleeping on the mattress. Many popular mattress sizes include Single, Long Single, King Single, Double, Queen,King and Super King. To help you determine which one is best for you, below is a list of each size and its dimensions:

Single: 92cm x 188cm

Long Single: 92cm x 203cm

King Single: 107cm x 203cm

Double: 138cm x 188cm

Queen: 153cm x 203cm

King: 183cm x 203cm

Super King: 183cm x 213cm

Firmness Levels to Match

Do you suffer from a sore neck or back? Maybe you like to have a cloud-like sinking feeling as you fall asleep? How firm your mattress is will depend on the level of support your body will require. This will take into account many personal circumstances such as injuries or chronic pain, the activities you do each day and personal preferences.

The firmness levels available across most brands are ‘Plush’, ‘Medium’ or ‘Firm’.

Plush: A soft and luxurious feel that you ‘sink’ in to, whilst providing some support to relieve pressure points such as those on your hips & shoulders. If you’re a side-sleeper, the plush feel  is ideal  for improved comfort and support around your hips and shoulders when you sleep on your side.

Medium: Soft yet supportive, a medium feel features comfy soft spots with firmness to provide support. Medium feel mattresses are suitable stomach and back sleepers as it will contour to your body and you won’t sink in as deeply as a plush feel.

Firm: Boasts an even and stable surface that will provide your back or stomach with maximum comfort and support. This is ideal for those who enjoy sleeping on their backs or have back aches as well as stomach-sleepers. A firm mattress will help keep the spine of stomach-sleepers aligned and not sink in like it would on a plush mattress.

Evaluate the Cost

Purchasing a new mattress is an investment in your rest, a better night’s sleep and health. How much you pay for a mattress will essentially depend on the size, comfort layers, spring systems, material and comfortlevel.

The most common mattress size for adults is a queen mattress, providing enough space for couples or for individuals who prefer a bit more space. As a guide, many queen size mattresses will cost from $500 upwards while more expensive models will set you back by $1,000 or more.  The more your mattress costs, the more likely it will provide the level of support you require, and the longer it will last you.

When shopping around for your mattress, you shouldn’t compromise on your needs due to costs. For many years, you’ll be resting on the mattress and waking up with it. After all, most people spend 30% of there lives in bed, so you need to consider that buying a quality mattress is an investment for your health much like good nutrition and exercise is.
