FAQ - Should I buy a washer dryer combo? Pros and Cons

You have finally moved into a place where you have an internal laundry, and now you have to think about buying a washing machine, and possibly a dryer too. But wait, there’s a 2-in-1 solution, a washer-dryer-combo! It sounds like the ultimate convenience to put dirty clothes in, and take dry, clean clothes out of the machine. But why doesn’t everyone have one? Is there a catch? We’re taking a closer look.

The washer-dryer combo

A washer-dryer combo looks a lot like a dryer in terms of size and setup, as they usually are front loaders, and combines the functionalities of both a washing machine and dryer in one. They usually come with different settings and wash and dryer programs as conventional washing machines and dryers do, plus what’s more is a special steam-wash feature that can reduce wrinkles and improve the machines overall performance.

Washer Dryer Combo pros and cons

The Pros

Washer-dryer combos are great because generally their washing and drying performance roughly matches separate washers and condenser dryers. You can also use either function separately if you wish to do so. Purchase and running costs don’t set you back any more than buying a separate washing machine and dryer, and when it comes to energy efficiency washer-dryer combos can actually be more efficient than two machines!

The Cons

There are certain drawbacks, for example that the dryer component of the washer dryer combo only has half the drying capacity than the washing component has, which means drying takes longer than usual. There are of course models that are said to be not as efficient as separate machines. If you decide on buying one, be sure to check reviews and energy ratings to ensure you get a model that delivers.

The Verdict

Having just one machine that can do both jobs, washing and drying in one, sounds like a dream combination, and in fact it might be your only option if you can only fit one machine. That it takes longer to dry might not be an issue for you either if you run it while you’re at work! Ultimately, it’s up to your own preference and budget.
