FAQ: How do I disconnect and move my washing machine?

Unlike a lot of other appliances in the home, a washing machine is generally a fixture in the same spot until one of two things happens: it gets replaced, or you move house. Assuming the unit is still in great health, and the former isn’t an issue, we’re going to run through the necessary steps for what moving house means for your washer.

What you’ll need:

-          Bucket or tray

-          Appliance dolly

-          A second person to assist

Step 1 – Turn off Water

Turn off the water valves behind or near the washer which its hoses are connected to. This is important to minimise any potential spills. Turn off both the hot and cold valves.

Step 2 – Remove remaining Water

To get the remaining water out of the hoses, turn the machine on for a warm wash for about 30 seconds. Then, switch the dial or setting over to spin, which will automatically drain that last bit of water away.

Step 3 – Switch off the machine

Now you can switch off and unplug the machine from the power point.

Step 4 – Detach hoses

Detach the hoses from the machine, carefully moving the openings into a bucket or sink to drain away any leftover water. Then, remove the hoses from the switched off water valves.

Step 5 – Detach drain hose

Remove the drain hose from the machine, and again, let any excess water drain away before removing it from the drain end.

Step 6 – Move the machine

The considerable heft of washing machines means the moving is best done with a dolly. From here, it’s easy to move the machine to the moving truck.

Step 7 – Clean up

That washer’s been stationary for a while, so it’s now a good opportunity to get a little bit of cleaning down, which can also prevent your washing machine from smelling later on. Wipe down the sides and back of the washer, and clean any residual gunk out of the inlets with a small bottle brush.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully prepared your washer for moving. On moving day, take the usual precautions and use rags or foam to guard against bumps and knocks, and then simply follow this guide in reverse to complete installation.
